Using Color In HTML

This matter of generating color on web pages with HTML is a little confusing
but I'll share with you what I have been able to learn.

Computer screens are like TV's. Colors are expressed in red, green, and blue values. An image is made from mixing dots of these colors in various intensities. Over 16 million different combinations can be made. However, Microsoft and Apple have chosen 216 of these colors to make up their color palette. These 216 colors supposedly look the same on all browsers. When a color is used that is not on this list, the browser tries to make up the color the best it can by doing something called dithering. And sometimes this dithered effect is not exactly what you were wanting! So to avoid this you should use only colors from the list of 216 non-dithering colors. This list is made from using all the hex code combinations of 00, 33, 66, 99, CC, and FF.

Later versions of Netscape and IE browsers also allow you to use a color name, rather than hex code, so I have also included a list of some of the color names. From what I can gather, they are not all non-dithering colors, so why they chose these is a real mystery to me!

If you can shed more light on this subject and would like to share with us, please email me!!
